Dubbed “an epiphany” by The New York Times, The Yehudim is a mixed ensemble of voices, vintage keyboards, electric guitars and basses, and percussion, conceived and directed by composer and New Amsterdam co-director Judd Greenstein. Taking the composer-led super-groups of the 1970s as inspiration – from Philip Glass, Steve Reich and Meredith Monk to Fela Kuti, Isaac Hayes and Herbie Hancock – The Yehudim explores characters from the Hebrew Bible, using the strange stories of their lives and the ancient writings around their characters to weave contemporary narratives that are Passions for our time.
Roomful of Teeth perform an integrated set featuring new work by indie-rock superstar Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs and electro-acoustic composer and New Amsterdam co-director William Brittelle written for the astoundingly talented multi-stylistic 8-person vocal group. Roomful studies and incorporates non-classical vocal practices, combines them with western styles, and develops new compositions using the fullest possible range of vocal techniques. The set will include Garbus performing selections from the tUne-yArDs catalog with Roomful as backing group, and the world premiere of a new arrangement by William Brittelle for the octet backed by The Yehudim.

Last August, Meghna Chakrabarti of WBUR in Boston interviewed director Brad Wells and alto Virginia Warnken. Their conversation as well as clips of Teeth performances can be heard here at the WBUR website.
In November, Roomful of Teeth spent four days in front of microphones, at the beautiful DiMenna Center in midtown Manhattan. Producer/engineer Jesse Lewis guided the recording of many new works written specifically for the group in the last two years, including Judd Greenstein’s AEIOU, William Brittelle’s epic Amid the Minotaurs, Merrill Garbus’ Ansa Ya, Caleb Burhans’ No, Sarah Kirkland Snider’s The Orchard, Rinde Eckert’s Cesca, and Caroline Shaw’s Passacaglia. An album is planned for release in 2012 on New Amsterdam Records.
The Ecstatic Music Festival takes place at Merkin Hall in February and March 2012.
Roomful of Teeth gathered August 15-26 2011 in North Adams, MA for another explosive two-week residency. Eunsu Kim coached the ensemble in the p’ansori singing style (from Korea) and Carl Linich brought his vast knowledge of Georgian polyphony to the table. Composer Sarah Kirkland Snider, whose Penelope (New Amsterdam Records) was hailed by many as one of the best works of 2010, wrote fresh work for Teeth, and Merrill Garbus (of tUnE-yArDs), whose music for Roomful of Teeth was featured at this year’s Ecstatic Music Festival in New York, returned to build on her triumphs. The residency culminated in a rocking concert in the B-10 Studio on Friday, August 26.
Last February Roomful of Teeth took the stage in the celebrated Ecstatic Music Festival at Merkin Hall in New York City. Premieres and expanded arrangements by featured composers Caleb Burhans, William Brittelle and tUnE-yArDs (Merrill Garbus). Each composer joined Roomful of Teeth as performers as well.
Check out next February’s collaboration with Glasser, for the 2012 Ecstatic Festival.
